Quickstart

1. Connect the iPhone

Plug your iPhone (or iPad/iPod) into the Mac via USB. Photo RollOff detects the device automatically and shows it in the sidebar. Tap "Trust This Computer" on the iPhone if the prompt appears.

2. Pick a target folder

Choose the folder where photos and videos should be transferred. It can be an internal drive, an external SSD, or a NAS. You can also enable automatic daily subfolders.

3. Start the import

Click "Start import". Photo RollOff transfers every file in its original form. Optionally, you can have files deleted from the iPhone right after a successful transfer.

Frequently asked questions

My iPhone is not detected

Check the following: Is the cable a data cable (some charging cables can't transfer data)? Have you tapped "Trust This Computer" on the iPhone? Does the iPhone show up in macOS Finder under "Locations"? If none of that helps, restart Photo RollOff and the iPhone.

How does verified deletion work?

Photo RollOff only deletes files from the iPhone that have demonstrably arrived on the Mac. In the settings you can choose whether deletion happens automatically after a successful verification or whether you confirm each deletion manually.

Which formats are supported?

Photo RollOff takes originals of all common photo and video formats from the iPhone: HEIC, JPEG, PNG, RAW, DNG, ProRAW, MOV, MP4, and GIF. Metadata such as EXIF, GPS location, and capture time are fully preserved.

Can I connect multiple devices at once?

Yes. If you connect multiple iPhones, iPads, or iPods at once, they all show up in the sidebar. You can switch between them and start separate import sessions for each device.

Where do I find earlier imports?

The archive shows a full list of all previous import sessions, including statistics on file sizes, formats, and a map with the capture locations. So you keep the overview even over long periods.

Does Photo RollOff work with iCloud Photos?

Photo RollOff accesses the originals on the iPhone directly, similar to importing in the Photos app or Finder. If your photos are optimized on the iPhone (i.e. only stored locally as a preview), iOS may need to fetch them from the server for the import. Depending on the connection and the amount of data, that can take a while.

Photo RollOff doesn't start or crashes
